QB Struggles

    Around The Horn made the comparison between Cam Newton and Vince Young stating their second season struggles were all too similar. Yes they are two African American quarterbacks who won national championships, but I do not think they are all that similar. Vince Young always looked to run first, pass second. Cam Newton has shown much more maturity that Vince Young ever did this early in his career. Cam not has the ability to drop back and be a pocket passer. Vince Young fazed out of the NFL because he was never comfortable in the pocket. 

    Another aspect that often goes overlooked is the fact that in the NFL anything can happen. Take a look at Green Bay right now. They have one of the best quarterbacks in the league, hands down, and they can't buy a win right now. They have been getting so unlucky. I believe this relates to Cam Newton because he has a tremendous work ethic, but you can't do anything to change your luck. 

    Yes, Cam is young, but I think the offensive coordinator also needs to take some of the heat for their record right now. Bomani Jones states that the Carolina's offensive coordinator does not like to call a lot of running plays for the actual running backs. Instead he likes to call an abundance of designed quarterback runs. I agree with this statement completely. I tend to think the designed QB run doesn't work in the NFL. The same goes for the option. There needs to be a balance between the pass and the run. You can't put all the pressure on Cam to get yards through the air if you have no running game. It just doesn't work. He is not a pocket passer to begin with. I think Carolina needs to step up and sign a big name running back to take some of the pressure off Cam.
